#1 USE YOUR EYES! Avoid awkward photos by using your eyes to express emotion. A good photographer will know how to relate to you in order to get the genuine expression from you, which takes the stress out of the entire thing. When a natural smile or expression occurs the whole face lights up and the eyes look bright and awake. You can try to practice smiling in the mirror and working on different expressions. You want the muscles in your face to contract and change the shape of your eyes to ensure your smile looks natural. Sometimes, I’ll tell you to smile with your eyes, and this is what I’m referring to. Posing is a lot like acting. The whole face and body have to convince the viewer you are feeling whatever emotion you’re feeling. I will also do things to make you laugh, this also creates a natural brightness in the eyes. It is always a good idea to bring along a friend or family member who does a good job of saying or doing things to get you to smile! Sometimes I egg that friend or family member along just to get my subject to crack up. When you have a photographer with experience and an ability to relate to their subject, it will definitely show up in the eyes!
